Dog size chart by weight
Five common weight bands, each with a rough chest range. Use it to orient yourself. The tape measure still decides.
| Size | Weight (lb) | Weight (kg) | Chest (cm) | Chest (in) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toy | under 10 | under 4.5 | up to 45 | up to 18 |
| Small | 10 to 25 | 4.5 to 11 | 45 to 61 | 18 to 24 |
| Medium | 25 to 55 | 11 to 25 | 61 to 79 | 24 to 31 |
| Large | 55 to 100 | 25 to 45 | 79 to 96 | 31 to 38 |
| Giant | over 100 | over 45 | 96 and up | 38 and up |
Chest ranges are estimates from FurSize's early model, not measurements of real dogs. Breeds with unusual proportions will fall outside them.
What to do with this
Find your dog's weight band. Open the shop's chart and look at the sizes whose chest range overlaps the one above. That narrows a dozen options to two. Then measure the chest to choose between them.
Want it computed for your dog? The dog size calculator takes a weight and returns the group and a chest estimate. For a puppy, use the puppy weight calculator.
Questions
What is a medium-sized dog?
By the common weight bands used here, roughly 25 to 55 lb (11 to 25 kg). Shops draw the line in different places, so treat it as a guide.
Why is the chest a range and not one number?
Shape. A lean sighthound and a stocky bulldog at the same weight do not have the same chest. The ranges here come from FurSize's early estimate model, which has not been calibrated on measured dogs yet.
Can I buy by this chart?
Use it to know roughly which section of a shop's chart to look at. For the actual purchase, measure the chest and match the shop's own chart.

Get a number you can reuse.
Measure once, then check any shop's chart against your dog's FurSize.
